This latest series of drawings and collages is based on a photo I have of the house that I grew up in in Canada. As with my previous work, I wanted to create a landscape built up out of flat surfaces, painted pieces of paper. I quickly realised how far away in time and space the house is, and I wanted to bring more depth into the flat surfaces. So I started folding the paper and stacking it. Using my knife, charcoal and pastels I drew on the collages, strengthening the illusion of depth, all in an attempt to bring the place in the picture closer to me - an impossible exercise, because the house as it was in the photo is no longer there. Thus the new series has become a patchwork of smaller works, each capturing a particular aspect of my memory and the atmosphere of that place. The collages can be seen separately or together in different constellations.
